In 2025 and 2026 Mike is continuing a series of violins based on the work of Carlo Bergonzi. Carlo lived in Cremona in the early 18th century, a contemporary of the elderly Stradivari and of Guarneri del Gesu, his instruments are known for excellent workmanship and a sound that melds the power and focus of a Strad with the warmth of a del Gesu.
A series of 5 string violins is getting great response for high end fiddlers. Based on a large french violin from the early 19th century, Mike’s 5 strings are violin sized, with a strong C string and a sweet overall tone. His setup choices push toward keeping as close to a “violin” feel as possible, while allowing for the extra string and enough volume to get both a powerful C string and a bright E string.
Violas, cellos, and occasional violins based on other models keep a balance of variety.
